General Info

The Methodist Home of the District of Columbia (MHDC) is a unique non-profit retirement community offering a continuum of care.  Assisted living, nursing, rehabilitation, and medical health services are provided in an intimate family-like setting at an affordable monthly cost— with no entry fee.

The Methodist Home first opened its doors on an April morning in 1889, providing for seven senior members of a Methodist Episcopal Church in the District of Columbia.

Now, embracing a diverse population of over a hundred seniors of all faiths, races, and economic levels, the Methodist Home proudly continues to uphold its original mission to provide a full, rich experience of comfort, security, and independence.

Operating as a non profit sets us apart from the “large chain” retirement communities. While committing to give the highest level of care in the industry, our organization frees us to embrace innovation to meet the changing needs of seniors and their care.  MHDC is proud to be a member of the Wellspring philosophy of caregiving.

Activities

Quality of life is important at the Methodist Home of D.C. — family (including family pets), friendships, and fun are priorities.  Beautiful landscaped gardens, a private courtyard, antiques in the library, and original artwork add warmth and charm to an elegant atmosphere that celebrates living.

Residents continue to pursue all the interests that they have always enjoyed in life — from exercising, to gardening, to painting and opportunities to discover new hobbies.  They keep in touch with family and friends via email or surf the Internet using the computers in the library with high-speed Internet access.  They may choose from a wide range of recreational, educational, cultural, or religious activities, and participate in an array of special events such as music, literature, lectures, and social gatherings.

Surrounding Area

MHDC is only minutes away from the nation’s Capitol building, the national mall, and historical American treasures such as the White House, the Washington Monument, and Arlington National Cemetery.   Other places of interest such as the Smithsonian museums and National Gallery of Art dot the cultural landscape.  Washington, D.C. plays host to the world-renowned National Symphony Orchestra, the Washington Ballet, and offers theater-goers exciting options such as the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, which is just a quick cab or car ride from MHDC.

Although transportation is available with MHDC’s private driving service, the Methodist Home of DC is conveniently located on Connecticut Avenue, NW on a main Metro bus route.  Tours of Washington, D.C. are available from nearby Union Station — which is the city’s main hub for Metro, motorcoach lines, and Amtrack train service. Residents have easy access to transport for the east coast corridor and beyond.  For friends and family traveling a further distance, Washington’s Reagan National Airport is less than 9 miles away.

Location

Our location in the prestigious northwest section of the District of Columbia affords exposure to all the excitement and activity that comes with a large city. Shops and restaurants are within close walking distance.  Green lawns and tree lined streets add a feeling of security that comes with neighborhood living.

Community

With its rich history and special traditions of caring, the Methodist Home enjoys an outstanding reputation in a community that we are committed to involving and serving.

Local elementary schools visit and the children add further touches of home and intimacy as they interact with the residents. School children, local churches and family members support volunteerism in activities and one-on-one visits with residents.

MHDC is also committed to encouraging the support and involvement of residents’ families in the on going activities, volunteerism, and life of the Methodist Home community.
